Miss Information did her civic duty. It was annoying.
It's municipal election day and Miss Information is very excited The place she lives very thoughtfully arranges for a polling place to set up in the lobby--she doesn't even need to put on shoes! Obviously she does put on shoes--adorable powder blue Converse low tops to be specific. She also puts on a Doctor Who t-shirt to be festive.
She didn't want to appear too eager so she arrived at the voting place about 10 minutes after it opened. She was surprised to find it closed. A staff member was putting tape across the entrance so she asked him what was going on. He wasn't sure--something about contamination and a need to disinfect. He wasn't sure when it would be ready for voting but thought they'd make an announcement.
A few hours later Miss Information passed the voting room. The tape was gone and there were election officials there. Miss Information asked if she could vote now. The officials said sorry no. It seems that when the voting closed that morning, they had packed up everything and taken it back to election headquarters--including the ballots.
It does make sense to not have loose ballots lying around. It makes less sense that the election officials who had taken them back had been reassigned to other polling stations. The people who were here were emergency replacement staff who had differences of opinion over election procedures. They had to wait for new ballots. There would probably be an announcement when they were ready for voting.
Miss Information used the downtime to gather ID. For some reason she had not gotten a voting card but she knew she'd be on the list of residents--just like the previous election.
The woman in front of her in line was not on the list but she was a new resident. It took a very long time to sort that out.
Miss Information's turn at last. She says she didn't get a voter card but handed over address ID, photo ID and her gym membership because she looks really cute in the photo. They went to look on the list of residents. She is not on it. There are many forms to be filled out and they assure her that this will add her to the voter list. She votes--finally.
Yay democracy.
